Martine and Léon Cligman have donated part of their art collection to the State and they have just supplemented it with a donation to the Pays de la Loire Region. The collection is mainly made up of paintings, sculptures and drawings, including works by major artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas and Delacroix. The Region has announced that a new museum will be set up at Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud in order to accommodate these donations.
This museum will be located in the Fannerie, to the left of the abbey's entrance, which will be specially fitted out in order to house and showcase the artworks. An endowment fund, which the Cligmans will contribute up to 5 million euros to, will help to fund the work with the planned completion date in 2019. For its part, the Region will assume responsibility for the preservation, restoration, study and enrichment of the Cligman collection through a scientific team which it will recruit.
Abbaye de Fontevraud is owned by the State and managed by the Pays de la Loire Region.
