At the closing event of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the World Heritage Convention, the historic town of Vigan (Philippines) was selected from among 28 nominees for the first official recognition of a best practice concerning the management of world heritage goods.
Vigan’s successful and sustainable management has been achieved with relatively limited resources, which should make it adaptable to sites in all countries. The local community is well integrated into many aspects of the sustainable conservation and management of the property; and a multi-faceted approach to the protection of the site has been developed.
Adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on 16th November 1972, the Convention is the most widely accepted treaty for preserving cultural and natural heritage in the world: 190 States have ratified it and it lists 962 cultural and natural goods.
